Beginner guitars for new guitarists

Selecting an instrument for a new learner can be a daunting task. Here’s what recommend at the KidTunes Guitar Program:

Acoustic

5-7 year olds

Half size guitar by “First Act,” available at Toys R Us. You’ll want the wooden kind, not plastic. You can tell by looking at the back of the guitar neck. If there are screws, it’s plastic. Expect to pay $20-$30.

8-12 year olds

Three-quarter size guitar by “First Act,” also available at Toys R Us. Toys R Us labels this as a “36 inch guitar.” It’s also available at Target or Kmart, and you can expect to pay $60-$70.

How do you know if your child is ready for this size? Test it out at the store. If he/she can easily reach the tuning keys comfortably without overextending their arm, this is the correct size.

over 12

For this age we recommend a full-size, available at Music Go Round in Wilkes-Barre. Expect to pay $100-200.

Electric

We recommend Ibanez, also available at Music Go Round in Wilkes-Barre. For a starter you can expect to pay $100-$200, and for a used high-end model you might spend $200-$300.

Of course, this is just a guide to get you started. Please contact us via email or phone or visit our Facebook page if you have any other questions. We look forward to serving you!
